| Abstract
|
| The paper explores XU Dachun’s differentiation of medicinal properties from the perspective of Metal-category medicinals. Through a systematic collation of therapeutic entries in Shennong Bencaojing Baizhonglu, this study finds that XU Dachun categorized medicinal attributes such as form, colour, odour and flavour according to the five elements,on the basis of the four qi and five flavours recorded in Shennong Bencaojing. His interpretation of medicinal properties from the metal perspective stands out most notably. He generalized metal-category medicinals from four dimensions:metal-corresponding colour,metal-corresponding qi,metal-corresponding form, and metal-corresponding flavour. Combined with Lantai Guifan, this paper summarizes the clinical applications of metal-category medicinals, which cover diseases and syndromes of the lung, gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary, and heart-brain systems. XU Dachun’s approaches to differentiating medicinal properties embrace the analogy by symbolic imagery from Huangdi Neijing, the holistic concept of the unity of human and nature, and the thinking of medicinal classification by natural imagery. These approaches provide a theoretical foundation for the therapeutic effects of medicinals. |
