Abstract
Acupuncture therapy has a long history of application in the treatment of central nervous system(CNS)diseases with remarkable efficacy. Its mechanism of action has been the subject of in-depth exploration by subsequent researchers. Ferroptosis is a new form of programmed cell death. Compared with other known programmed cell death, ferroptosis is characterized by distinct features in cell morphology, biochemistry and genetics. The core mechanism involves iron metabolism disorders, lipid peroxidation, and dysfunction of antioxidant defense. Ferroptosis is closely related to the occurrence and progression of various CNS diseases, but its mechanism of action remains to be clarified. In-depth analysis of the effect of acupuncture therapy on ferroptosis process and its connection with CNS diseases will provide a new theoretical basis for the innovative application of acupuncture therapy in the treatment of CNS diseases. By systematically reviewing and integrating the relevant literature, this article aims to advance the current understanding of the scientific mechanisms underlying acupuncture in the treatment of CNS diseases.
