| Abstract

| Diabetic microvascular complications significantly impact patient prognosis, with various clinical manifestations potentially sharing a common pathological foundation. Ferroptosis, a non-apoptotic form of iron-dependent cell death, is posited as a potential unifying mechanism underlying these complications. This article provides a comprehensive overview of the role of ferroptosis in diabetic microvascular complications, elucidating its contribution to the onset and progression of diabetic retinopathy, nephropathy, neuropathy, cardiomyopathy, and foot ulcers through mechanisms such as intracellular iron overload, lipid peroxidation, and antioxidant defense imbalance. Furthermore, the article reviews the advancements in research on traditional Chinese medicines and their active components in inhibiting ferroptosis by modulating pathways such as regulating nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), glutathione (GSH) /glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4), and iron metabolism, thereby ameliorating these complications. The article underscores the value of targeting ferroptosis with traditional Chinese medicines for preventing and treating diabetic microvascular issues. |
